Pundit’s Choice: Marco Silva’s Everton - Pundits Choice

Everton supporters have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team record a second successive victory in the Premier League at the weekend.

Marco Silva’s men went into their encounter with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium off the back of beating Fulham 3-0 in their previous league clash, although they did lose to Southampton in the Carabao Cup in midweek. And the Toffees made it two league wins on the bounce on Saturday as goals from Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson either side of a Ricardo Pereira equaliser sealed a 2-1 success for the Toffees, thus moving them level on points with the Foxes in the Premier League table.

As such, there have been many thrilled Evertonians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent comments from BBC pundit Garth Crooks, who has said that the Toffees are ‘starting to look like an interesting proposition’ under new boss Silva.

And after two very impressive displays in the Premier League, it’s hard to disagree with Crooks’ intriguing verdict of where Everton are at under the Portuguese, as things have certainly improved greatly in the last few weeks.

Ultimately, there was much anticipation among Toffees fans over the summer following the appointment of 41-year-old Silva, what with those supporters becoming increasingly frustrated with the football played by former boss Sam Allardyce, and thus hoping for something more expansive and exciting from the next manager.

And while they were unbeaten in their opening four league games under the Portuguese, they won only one of those matches and simply weren’t able to see out possible victories over Wolves and Bournemouth, as well as only mustering a 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield Town.

And things took a turn for the worse soon after with a lacklustre defeat against West Ham before a 2-0 loss against Arsenal, and while they didn’t play badly in the latter clash, their inability to score when on top alongside clear defensive vulnerabilities remained apparent.

Yet they are things Silva appears to be slowly sorting.

The Toffees swept aside Fulham 3-0 at Goodison Park at the end of September before producing their best display of the campaign at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, with Silva’s decision to play Richarlison through the middle as a number nine, and thus bring Bernard in down the left, proving to be a masterstroke.

And while it needed a moment of brilliance from Sigurdsson to win them the game, the Merseysiders looked like a much more rounded outfit against the Foxes, with summer signings Kurt Zouma and Lucas Digne further settling in at the back, while Bernard was a constant menace down the left-hand-side.

As such, Crooks is spot on to suggest that the Toffees are becoming an ‘interesting proposition’ under Silva, as it looks as though the Portuguese has got to grips with the issues in his side, and is beginning to find solutions if the last two games are anything to go by.

The future does indeed look to be bright for Everton supporters.
