Rangers: Borna Barisic deserves credit for turning Ibrox career around according to pundit

Borna Barisic, and his manager Steven Gerrard, deserve huge credit after the Croatian defender has turned his career at Rangers around, that is according to Steven Smith.

The 26-year-old joined the Ibrox club from Osijek in 2018, but struggled in his first season in Glasgow. Indeed he was in and out of the first 11 last term as he made just 13 league starts (via Transfermarkt).

But things seem to finally be clicking for the left-back this year, and former Rangers defender Smith has been impressed with how he has been playing and believes that he deserves plenty of credit for the upturn in performances.

Speaking to the Evening Times, Smith said: “I watched him quite closely when he first came in because I understand that position. And he, to me, always looked like he had all the attributes to be a good left-back.

“When he played with Osijek, he was clearly talented but he didn’t show it often enough for Rangers. There were bits in games where you could see he had it all and he is in the Croatian national side as well.

“He has got a great left foot, he is quite tall and quick, and you know there is a player there. He didn’t quite put it all together last season but now we are seeing the real Barisic, the one that everybody thought they were getting. It is good to see.

“Sometimes when players move to a new club, especially one like Rangers, and have a difficult start then it is hard to turn that around. I think you have to credit the manager for that as well because he persisted with him.”

There is no doubting that Barisic has shown tremendous improvement this season when compared to last term.

In just five appearances this campaign he has already helped the Gers to four clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership, whilst he has also shown what he can do in an attacking sense by chipping in with two goals and an assist (via Transfermarkt).

Added to that, he has also played well in their Europa League games against Feyenoord and Young Boys, picking up an assist in each game (via Transfermarkt).

Barisic has started Rangers’ last six games in league, cup and Europe and with two goals and three assists in that time, the shirt looks to be his to lose. That is some turnaround considering he was left out of the squad completely at the end of last season.
