Rangers: Neil McCann makes Alfredo Morelos claim as Colombian’s hot streak continues

Former Rangers hero Neil McCann has claimed that the Ibrox club shouldn’t entertain selling Alfredo Morelos for anything less than the £25m Celtic received for Kieran Tierney in an article in The Scottish Sun.

McCann’s comments come after the Colombian international dismantled Hearts with two goals and an assist in the 3-0 win on Sunday.

McCann was effusive in his praise of Morelos and after his showing against Hearts, he feels it only cements his importance to Rangers if they are to challenge on all fronts this season.

When asked about the possibility of Morelos leaving, McCann said:

“The manager will put up a healthy fight, that’s for sure. I can’t see for the life of me the board entertaining Morelos going unless it was stupid money.

“I mean, it would have to be crazy cash – £25m-plus, maybe, Kieran Tierney money. You see guys moving down south readily from the Championship for that type of money.

“When you look at Morelos, he is a fantastic goalscorer and has so much to offer, powerful. To Rangers, is he worth more if they were offered £25m? I think Steven Gerrard would argue yes, because I think they have a real genuine opportunity of winning the Premiership this season.”

Morelos scored his 20th goal of the season against Hearts on Sunday and it has only just turned November. Celtic shelled out £9m for Odsonne Edouard and, as yet, he has been incapable of producing those numbers. Selling Morelos for £25m+ is no guarantee that Rangers would be able to replace his output.

The most important point that McCann references is that Rangers have a genuine chance of winning the Scottish Premiership this season. Steven Gerrard has stated that Morelos is going nowhere in January and if they are to have a genuine chance of competing with Celtic, then you would imagine that has to be the case.

Jermain Defoe is an able deputy and is, remarkably, top league goalscorer despite only playing half the games, but he is 37 and can’t be expected to play week-in, week-out.

McCann is right, it would have to be ‘silly money’ for the Rangers board to entertain selling Morelos and jeopardise their first genuine chance of winning the league for years and ending bitter rivals Celtic’s domestic dominance.
