Tottenham Hotspur: Harry Kane will be ‘devastated’ despite Crystal Palace win, says Alan Shearer

Record Premier League goalscorer Alan Shearer believes Harry Kane will be ‘devastated’ that he did not get on the scoresheet despite his Tottenham side being amongst the goals in their comfortable 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Spurs overran their opponents with a first-half blitz that saw Mauricio Pochettino’s team score three times in the opening 25 minutes.

But after scoring four times on international duty last week, Kane was unable to get in on the act for his club, as they were made to settle for a Son Heung-min double, an Erik Lamela strike and a Patrick van Aanholt own-goal to do the damage against their London rivals.

Speaking on Match of the Day (via HITC), Shearer believes that despite the team grabbing their first win since the opening day of the season, Kane would be greatly disappointed at not upping his goal tally.

When host Gary Lineker asked how Kane would be feeling, Shearer replied: “You would be pleased your team won, but you’d be devastated that you haven’t scored.”

Given Spurs were in a free-scoring mood judging by their first-half performance, there may be an argument to suggest Kane missed out on the chance of exploiting a leaky Palace defence to improve his standing on the scoring charts.

However, with the result wrapped up before the break, and a midweek trip to Greece in the Champions League in midweek, perhaps Kane and his teammates would be able to benefit from conserving energy ahead of a packed fixture list, with a visit to Leicester City to come next Saturday lunchtime.

And with three goals in his opening five league games, Kane is still on course for a goal-filled campaign – with his current ratio projecting an eventual finish of 22 goals this league season – which would have been enough to earn the 26-year-old another Golden Boot last year.

So regardless of whether Kane would be distraught from a game without a goal, it is surely not going to define his season unless he is unable to shake that disappointment off in the games ahead.
