Tottenham Hotspur: Shaka Hislop backs Spurs for top-four finish - Pundits Choice

‘It’s a good-looking team’ – Shaka Hislop tips Premier League side for another top-four berth

Tottenham have a good enough team to finish in the top four once again next season, according to ESPN FC pundit Shaka Hislop.

The former West Ham goalkeeper was commenting on Spurs’ slender pre-season victory over Real Madrid when he outlined his belief that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could have a squad of the required level to ensure a fifth consecutive top-four place.

Spurs will be back in competitive action next weekend in the Premier League for the first time since falling short in the Champions League final, and following their acquisition of Tanguy Ndombele in the transfer market, Hislop singled out the Frenchman and his new club’s strength in depth ahead of the new campaign.

He said: “I thought Ndombele looked excellent again today, and as you look at this squad, you’re wondering about Spurs, about their depth during the course of the season.

“But [when] you play against Real Madrid, [and] you dominate as you did, and you’re still able to call on the likes of Dele Alli and [Moussa] Sissoko off the bench – it’s a good-looking team that maybe has the depth that can see them cement their position in the top four. It’s a good-looking Spurs outfit.”

Spurs have only finished outside the top four once under Pochettino – in the Argentinian’s first season at the helm in 2014/15.

Pochettino has not added to his squad with plenty of arrivals this summer – although he did reach the Champions League final without spending a penny last year.

So it may be difficult to gauge the limitations of this Tottenham side given what they have achieved under the supposed disadvantage of not having substantially added to the ranks for the best part of two years.

Though with Chelsea’s manager changing hands and other top-six rivals Arsenal and Manchester United ending the previous campaign in relative disarray, the addition of Ndombele alone could arguably put Spurs in a better position than they were a year ago with plenty of potential areas to exploit in their main rivals and a Champions League final under their belt.
