You know, the best thing about being a Manchester United player ‘back in the day’ was that you could genuinely be rubbish and still earn a Premier League title. And this is no more obvious than in the case of a certain Alexander Buttner.
Sir Alex Ferguson knew how to spot a good player that much was obvious – just look at Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Jaap Stam, Denis Erwin, Patrice Evra, Roy Keane, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and so on.
However, the legendary Scot also let the odd one, two…three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve (keep counting) rotter’s slip through the net. Need we remind you of Bebe?
We all knew it at the time that players like Gabriel Obertan weren’t fit to wear the shirt. But we rolled with it, trusted the great man in charge, and for the most part, Ferguson made it work.
Alexander Buttner was another one of those “talents” who somehow crept into the United squad. Having signed for Manchester United as a budding 23-year-old for a fee of £3.9million in 2012, a year before Ferguson’s retirement (always knew it was losing it), the Dutch left-back was welcomed as, “one of the best young left backs in Europe”.
But despite claiming a Premier League trophy in his first season, it became abundantly clear that he wasn’t of the standard necessary to replace even an ageing Patrice Evra. Hence the signing of Luke Shaw a few years later. Though, we’d argue that Luke Shaw is just the English equivalent (don’t shoot).
You may remember when David Moyes banned chips at United. Yeah? Well, our man Alexander ‘chubby chip buster’ Buttner was the reason behind it.
As the story goes, the ‘Chosen One’ thought Buttner was looking a slice overweight when he sauntered past once, only to realise that he was devouring a plate of chips alongside his normal meal.
Needless to say, he wasn’t best pleased, and the chip ban came in soon after.
You’ve got to be some player to be remembered for that.
