Transfer Battle: Ruben Neves vs Joao Moutinho

Wolves have made a brilliant start to the season following their promotion to the Premier League and as such, look like they could well break into the top 10.

Due to their relationship with Portuguese super agent, Jorge Mendes, Wolves have been able to pick up some of the best talent from the agent’s homeland and over the summer, they once again dipped into that market to bring in Monaco midfielder, Joao Moutinho.

The experienced midfielder has formed a solid partnership with star man Ruben Neves and on current form, the two are arguably the form midfield partnership in the league.

Joao Moutinho

Signed from Monaco over the summer for £5 million, Moutinho has come in and provided some excellent experience for the side in their return to the Premier League.

In Wolves’ 5-4-1, the two midfielders have been superb and are the two metronomes in the side that keep the play going and push Wolves up the pitch on the counter-attack. At 32, he may not have the energy he once had in his early days, having won the European Championship and Ligue 1, he’s made an instant impact with his excellent ball retention and eye for a pass. Indeed, he’s made eight appearances for Wolves in the league this season and is going to be the perfect mentor for Neves.

At just £5 million, it looks like Wolves have made another superb piece of business.

Ruben Neves

Ever since his arrival at the club, Ruben Neves has been an absolute star for Nuno Espirito Santo. In his first season at the club, the former Porto man made 42 appearances in the Championship, scoring six goals to go along with one assist.

As proven by his time in Liga Nos, he has superb ability with the ball and moreover, his ability to pick a pass from deep, has been a huge weapon in Wolves’ attack this season. With Moutinho alongside him, Neves has formed a very solid partnership and one that could possibly get the Midlands side into the top 10.

Such is his ability that it would seem likely that the 21-year-old is destined for a big move over the summer.

The midfielder was signed for £16 million 14 months ago and the club has already slapped a £110 million price tag on him. Wolves have got a future star on their hands.

The Verdict

Two players that have very similar attributes and quality, the battle between Moutinho and Neves is one of two midfield maestros who have both had a huge effect on the side.

Moutinho’s experience looks to be proving dividends on the side and it will directly benefit Neves in the long run. Considering the price the club paid for him, it looks like an absolute steal so far, however, just in terms of his huge potential, Neves wins this one. Wolves won’t be able to keep him for long and at the moment, he looks like a future top six player in the making.
