There is no doubt that this weekend’s tastiest Premier League match is the humdinger between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off spot.
Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino will be getting sick of the sight of each other as the pair have had to come up against one another three times already, with the last meeting just days before this one.
Both managers will know that a moment of magic and ingenuity from their star men on the field and could look to the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Christian Eriksen to provide them with it with their ability to create chances.
However, who is more likely to come out on top when the duo are compared in one of our battles? Let’s take a closer look and find out below.
Kevin de Bruyne
The midfielder, who is valued at £135million (Transfermarkt), has been nothing but sensational for Guardiola’s side following Txiki Begiristain’s decision to bring him to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2015 for a £55m fee.
De Bruyne was simply unplayable the last time these two sides met as he registered a hat-trick of assists in their midweek encounter in the Champions League. He has missed a lot of the season with a number of injuries, however, he did not appear to be a man that has been absent for lengthy periods.
The Belgium international seems to have hit top form in terms of providing assists, as he recorded his first two of the season in the top-flight against Crystal Palace last weekend as well, which could prove pivotal in their attempts to land the Premier League title.
If De Bruyne plays to the same standard in Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff, Spurs could be in for a really testing afternoon, especially as the Citizens will be looking to exact revenge almost immediately.
TT Grade: A+
Eriksen has become a key man for Tottenham since joining them from Ajax for a fee of £12.15m and will have left Daniel Levy laughing with just how cheaply he managed to secure his signature for.
Six years down the line, the Denmark international has proven to be prolific when it comes down to the final third of the pitch, as he has managed to record a staggering 85 assists and 64 goals in his 268 appearances so far.
The 27-year-old provided one assist in their Champions League encounter with Manchester City on Wednesday night when he passed the ball to Son Heung-min for his stunning second goal.
If he can replicate those crucial passes once again on Saturday, he could make life extremely difficult for Guardiola’s backline and help Pochettino’s side secure their place in the top-four of the Premier League.
TT Grade: A
There is no denying that both players are at the top of their game and will have to be in the conversation of being considered as some of the best playmakers in the world of football, which makes this battle even more difficult to conclude.
However, when pushed for a decision, De Bruyne has to be considered the winner as the Belgium international has shown his true quality at times and can provide the magic to change the game from almost nothing.
Eriksen is world-class, however, the Manchester City man can be a world-beater on his day.
