TT Battle: Nabil Fekir vs Christian Eriksen

It may have been some season for Tottenham Hotspur as they prepare for a Champions League final, however, that should not draw away from the fact that reinforcements will still be needed in the summer.

For all of Spurs’ great European feats this season (and there have been a few), their domestic form has suffered. So, adding quality to the side must surely be a priority for Mauricio Pochettino in the upcoming transfer window.

Indeed, the transfer rumour mill will start to go into overdrive now with some rather huge stories, including one that involves Tottenham and Nabil Fekir.

On the other hand, stars will also be linked with moves away from their respective clubs as they seek new challenges or hope the grass is greener elsewhere, for example, Christian Eriksen.

However, as is the norm with our Transfer Battles, if we were to compare the duo in closer detail, who would come out on top? Let us take a look below…

Nabil Fekir

Right, so where do the fresh Fekir and Tottenham rumours come from? Well, Le Parisien (via Sport Witness) are claiming Spurs would be interested in signing the World Cup winner this summer. However, that is all they say as there is no mention of any of the juicy details or even if the attacking midfielder would be keen on a switch to the club.

But, should Eriksen depart from the north London outfit, then it would not be a surprise to see the club look to the playmaker as an ideal replacement for the Dane. It may not have been his best season in front of goal, however, the £63million-rated ace (Transfermarkt) was still rather clinical in front of goal.

Fekir bagged 12 goals and provided his Olympique de Lyonnais team-mates with nine assists in his 39 appearances across all competitions this year. Those figures would certainly go along way into filling any potential void Eriksen may leave if he departs.

The 25-year-old’s contract at the Ligue 1 outfit expires next summer and it is understood that he has recently rejected a new offer from the club to extend it (L’Equipe via Get French Football News), so Tottenham could look to try and land him on a cut-price deal as Lyon will not want to lose their star for free next summer.

Christian Eriksen

Eriksen has become a key man for Tottenham since joining them from Ajax for a fee of £12.15m and will have left Daniel Levy laughing with just how cheaply he managed to secure his signature for.

Six years down the line, the Denmark international has proven to be prolific when it comes down to the final third of the pitch, as he has managed to record a staggering 86 assists and 66 goals in his 276 appearances so far.

However, there is a chance that the Champions League final in Madrid may be his last game for Spurs as speculation about his future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium continues to intensify and remain in the limelight.

At the beginning of May, it was claimed by AS that Eriksen had ‘verbally agreed’ to join Real Madrid this summer. However, with the ball in Levy’s court, it would be hard to see a move happen unless the Spanish giants stump up a reported £200m for his signature (Daily Star), despite having just one year left on his present deal, although Tottenham remain confident he will sign a new one (Goal).

The Verdict:

Losing Eriksen is obviously something that Tottenham are not going to want to do, however, if they were to bring in Fekir as his replacement, it might just be worth considering.

Spurs would likely be able to negotiate a price with Lyon for the World Cup winner because of the player’s current contract situation, whilst it might make sense for them to cash in on their own maestro who is in the same position.

Fekir is also a younger talent and would still have a number of years left in his career to make an impact. If Pochettino was able to work miracles with him and take him to another level as he did with Eriksen, then many at the club will not be too concerned with a potential departure.
