TT Battles: Samu Saiz vs Harvey Barnes

Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion have been two of the standout performers in the Championship this season, despite the Baggies falling off the pace recently.

The Whites currently find themselves in pole position after a terrific start to life under Marcelo Bielsa, while the Midlands club sit in seventh position having suffered a dip in form.

Interestingly, it has been Harvey Barnes that has made all the headlines for West Brom in the current campaign, however, the same can’t be said about Samuel Saiz as he continues to struggle for form at Leeds United.

With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…

SAMUEL SAIZ

Samuel Saiz signed for Leeds United in the summer of 2017 as he made the move from Spanish side SD Huesca.

The Spaniard established himself as one of the standout performers in the Championship during his first season at Elland Road, as he scored nine goals and provided eight assists. But, things haven’t exactly gone to plan in the current campaign, with just one goal and two assists to his name so far.

Nevertheless, the attacking midfielder has the ability to create something out of absolutely nothing on his day, but failing to ensure consistency on the field could force him to take a step backwards.

TT GRADE: B

HARVEY BARNES

Harvey Barnes joined West Bromwich Albion on loan from Premier League side Leicester City in the summer.

The Englishman has established himself as one of the standout performers in the Championship since making the move to the Hawthorns, with five goals and four assists to his name already. Indeed, the attacking midfielder’s contributions have helped the Baggies climb into play-off contention, as they continue to push for promotion.

Although only a loan deal, this is one that looks at this point to be crucial and one which could define the Midlands club’s season.

TT GRADE: A

TT VERDICT:

When comparing these two, it’s clear to see that Barnes is performing at the top of his game this season, while Saiz fails to live up to expectations at Elland Road.

Of course, it’s inevitable that the youngster will return to his parent club and fight for a first-team place there upon the expiry of his loan deal, having enjoyed a successful time of things at the Hawthorns.

But, the same can’t be said about the Whites’ attacking midfielder this season as he continues to disappoint supporters having been a passenger for large parts of the campaign.

So, with Barnes tipped for big things and already reaping the rewards at West Brom, it’s about time Saiz started to repay Bielsa for his patience in the current campaign.
