Flashback: Man United sign Martial

At the end of the 2015 summer transfer window, Man United made the late swoop for the little-known forward Anthony Martial.

The Red Devils signed the Frenchman from Ligue 1 outfit Monaco for £36m, with the possibility of that fee rising to over £50m.

Many fans took to Twitter to question the signing, particularly at such an extortionate price, for a player that was barely known. After all, Man United were one of the biggest clubs on the planet, and fans wanted to see established names arrive at Old Trafford.

After a fairly lacklustre summer spending, many fans also deemed this to be a panic buy, as the club wanted to bring in another face before the transfer window ended. Manager Louis van Gaal, therefore, received a lot of criticism from the supporters for this.

Since joining Man United, it is fair to say that Martial has not set the world alight, but has equally not been a poor signing.

His first season at Old Trafford was the most successful for the club, where he recorded his best goal haul in the Premier League. He has been brilliant in spells, but has equally been off the boil for periods, and has therefore struggled to cement his place at United.

While he struggled to win over current manager José Mourinho, the Portuguese has warmed to him, and he is beginning to play a prominent role at Man United. It has not been plain sailing, but Martial’s future looks bright at Man United.
