Flashback: Sheffield Wednesday miss out on promotion – twice - Transfer Flashbacks

It’s arrived once more – the Championship play-off final. A moment of real excitement for those both involved and not. Touted as the richest game in football, clubs far and wide each season battle for a place. Its mere reference can swiftly concoct a violent swirl of emotion – ecstasy for some, but for others it’s a sudden reminder of true heartbreak. It’s fair to say Sheffield Wednesday fall in to the latter category. They certainly haven’t been blessed by the football Gods in recent years, let’s put it that way.

Wednesday were oh so close to a Premier League return in 2016 for the first time in 16 years. However, it wasn’t to be. A 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hull City crushed their dreams. It’s fair to say, the fans took it hard, but were immensely proud of what they had achieved.

Yet, it gets worse. Wednesday were again desperately close to a Premier League return the season that followed. This time, they were dumped out by the eventual winners Huddersfield Town on penalties to make it a second successive campaign where they were left with utter disappointment.

To suffer once again just a year on cannot have been easy for any fan. They have certainly seen a decline this season, finishing outside of the play-off places. Yet, they will be optimistic of a return next term – but will hope to avoid the play-offs once and for all.

What do you think Wednesday fans? Can you achieve automatic promotion next season? Or will you have to aim for the dreaded play-off finals again? Let us know by commenting below.
