Flashback: Sunderland 3-0 Everton in 2016 - Transfer Flashbacks

Sunderland fans are having a torrid time in League One at the moment, but it’s worth remembering that times weren’t always bad. It was less than three years ago that the Mackems beat the odds, and Everton, to stay in the Premier League on the penultimate day of the 2015/16 season, instead watching bitter rivals Newcastle suffer the drop.

The Black Cats didn’t just win their penultimate game of the 2015/16 season to stay up, they did it in incredible style, with a thumping 3-0 win over Everton. Two goals from Lamine Kone after Patrick Van Aanholt’s opener set them on their way for yet another Premier League season, and some fans had extremely high hopes for the following year given Leicester City’s heroics.

Sadly, we all know that it wasn’t to be for the Mackems as after they managed to scrape survival in 2016, they found themselves dropping down the footballing ladder twice in both 2017 and 2018. It now looks like Jack Ross is starting to help them get back where they want to be, and until they make it to the top tier again they’ll have to just live off of the memories of wins like that one against Everton.

You can see what the Mackems said after that famous win below:

The Black Cats believed they could do anything after what is still their most recent Premier League win, and one day will hope to be back getting more victories just like it.
