Transfer Flashback: Angel Rangel to QPR

Transfer Flashback: Angel Rangel to QPR

On August 15th 2018, Queens Park Rangers announced the signing of Angel Rangel on short-term contract.

The experienced defender was snapped up on a free transfer back in the summer transfer window after his contract expired at former club Swansea City.

A lot of supporters gushed over the club’s decision to sign Angel Rangel, as they took to the confirmation on Twitter to express their delight over the signing.

Rangel represented a number of Spanish clubs before signing for Swansea City on a one-year performance-related deal back in 2007. He made an immediate impact at the Liberty Stadium by helping the Swans secure promotion to the Championship, and then went on to aid their promotion to the Premier League in the 2011/12 season.

The Spaniard spent 11 years in Wales, making 373 appearances. But, the 36-year-old was released by the Swans at the end of last season, which opened the door for Queens Park Rangers to secure his services.

On the 15th of August 2015, Queens Park Rangers signed Angel Rangel to a short-term deal.

QPR found themselves in a spot of bother towards the start of the current campaign as they lost their opening four games, including a 7-1 defeat at the Hawthorns. Steve McClaren tried to solve his side’s issues by bringing in Geoff Cameron, Nakhi Wells and Tomer Hemed but his most important signing has proved to be Rangel.

Indeed, the full-back has provided the valuable experience that was missing in defence for the Hoops, which has helped cure their defensive issues. He has also scored two goals and provided two assists.

The former Swansea man signed an extension to his short-term deal back in January, tying him down until the end of the season, but he hasn’t featured since the 8th of December 2018 due to an injury.

It comes as no surprise that fans were delighted to see the defender join the club as he proved to be arguably their best summer signing by helping them climb out of trouble. And, it’s safe to say that the Hoops wouldn’t be in the respectable position they currently find themselves in if it wasn’t for Rangel.

Of course, hats off to McClaren as his genius swoop helped get the Hoops out of a lot of trouble.
