Arsenal decided to splash the cash on Calum Chambers on 28 July 2014 as they signed him from Southampton on a long-term contract.
It was understood that the Gunners had spent around £16million on acquiring him as they looked to bolster their defensive ranks at the club after being impressed with what he was managing to achieve at the Saints despite still being a teenager.
Fans reacted to the club’s official Twitter announcement with delight about the prospect of Chambers lining up in their side and definitely saw him as a player with a bright future ahead of him and one they could not wait to see in the team. However, as the years have gone by, Chambers’ career at Arsenal has become somewhat of a peculiar case.
He showed signs that he could be excellent for the Gunners in the future with his performances towards the back end of last season’s campaign and clearly has the potential to make it as a player in the top-flight.
Having made a number of appearances for the Gunners, he has since been out on loan twice, with spells at Middlesborough and more recently Fulham, where has impressed in a midfield role at times, although he did not manage to do enough to keep them from falling straight back to the Championship after one season in the Premier League.
The move to Fulham was all the more surprising in the summer given that he had just signed a new long-term deal and Unai Emery revealed that he felt Chambers would be a part of his plans for the current campaign.
“I’m delighted Calum has extended his stay with us. He played an important role last season and will be part of my plans this season,” he told the club’s official website.
And, with the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Rob Holding all at the club as well, whether the 24-year-old still has a role to play at the Emirates Stadium remains to be seen.
