Transfer Flashback: Barry Douglas to Leeds United

Transfer Flashback: Barry Douglas to Leeds United

It was quite the coup, wasn’t it? In late July during the summer transfer window, Leeds United managed to capture Barry Douglas from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a three-year deal. The Scotsman had just topped the table with Wolves so the signing came as quite a surprise, especially for the Molineux faithful.

It was, though, the United fans that were very excited by their first permanent signing of the summer under Marcelo Bielsa’s reign.

On the other hand, Wolves fans not so much. A lot of their supporters were frustrated by the fact that such a key player had been let go so easily and numerous fans voiced their concern.

Douglas started the campaign brightly, but he has suffered a couple of niggles and has now been sidelined for the season following a recent knee injury. Ezgjan Alioski has filled in at left-back and has made the position his own of late, meaning that even when Douglas has been fit since the turn of the year, Bielsa tended to give Alioski the nod.

When Douglas returns from injury, he will certainly be looking to impress in pre-season to do all he can to win back that starting left-back berth. Indeed, if they’re in the Premier League, he looks tailor-made for it. Though he was denied top-flight football by Wolves, the Scotland man can thrill Elland Road with his wing-back expertise, a crucial facet in the top tier these days.
