Transfer Flashback: Benjamin Mendy

Transfer Flashback: Benjamin Mendy

Given the expectations that came with Pep Guardiola’s appointment as manager, Manchester City’s 2016/17 season can only be described as unsuccessful.

The Spaniard, however, knew that and quickly moved in the summer prior to the following campaign to improve his squad by signing Benjamin Mendy and co.

And after the year the Frenchman just had at AS Monaco, supporters were delighted to see him arrive at the Etihad.

Mendy, of course, played a huge role in Monaco’s 2016/17 Ligue 1 triumph with the 24-year-old putting in performances that saw him quickly become one of Europe’s leading left-backs.

Both domestically and in the Champions League as Leonardo Jardim’s men went on to reach the semi-finals, Mendy performed exceptionally well.

Unfortunately for Guardiola and Manchester City supporters, though, Mendy’s complete full-back performances have rarely been seen at the Etihad.

When the France international has played, his quality has been there for everyone to witness. He is usually defensively solid, while going forward he has offered this Manchester City side so much.

However, injuries have limited his minutes on the pitch with Guardiola now said to be eyeing up Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell (Telegraph), as a result.

All in all, despite all of the hype which is still understandable, Mendy has not been able to deliver in the way the Etihad faithful would have hoped.
