Transfer Flashback: Carlos Pena’s Cruz Azul loan

Transfer Flashback: Carlos Pena’s Cruz Azul loan

Carlos Pena is one name that fans at Ibrox will be eager to forget as quickly as possible. The Mexican sums up Pedro Caixinha’s time at the club perfectly. He came in with the nickname of ‘Gullit’ and had all the talent to succeed, but flopped massively owing to an awful attitude, and by the time he left for Cruz Azul on loan his time was already up.

That first loan back to his homeland, Mexico, was a relief for the Gers, but it went almost as badly as his time in Glasgow did. The loan was confirmed in the January window of 2018 as the five-goal Bluenose finally left the club, even if only on a temporary basis. At Cruz Azul, he didn’t even make it to May after starting just twice, being booed by his own fans and urinating in a fountain after a night of heavy drinking.

It will be a massive relief for the Gers that Carlos Pena has now been axed at Ibrox altogether. No loan-spell is active that can be cut short at any time and he will most certainly never be returning to Glasgow to turn out for the Bluenoses, and that is all that matters as far as the Gers are concerned. Pena is probably the biggest flop in their history, and the fans will hope he can be quickly forgotten.

You can see what the Gers had to say after Pena’s first loan here:

The Gers hated every minute of Carlos Pena’s time at the club, and will all be delighted that they never have to see him in Glasgow blue again.
