Transfer flashback: DeAndre Yedlin

Back in September 2015, Sunderland managed to pull off quite the loan coup in bringing then Tottenham youngster DeAndre Yedlin to the club on a season-long loan deal. At the time, there was somewhat of a mystique around youth players in North London, considering the impressive work put in by Mauricio Pochettino, so there was certainly reasons to be excited.

Yedlin, who had impressed with the United States at the World Cup the year before, was one of the last batch of players brought in by Dick Advocaat prior to Sam Allardyce’s arrival. Indeed, it was under the latter where he flourished, despite failing to wholly convince upon his initial arrival on Wearside.

The defender himself said Allardyce ‘made something click’ when he took over at the Stadium of Light and managed to keep Sunderland in the Premier League. Before that, Yedlin was often seen as a speed merchant, offering pace and attacking penetration on the wing, without ever really proving he can do it going the other way.

Well, all that changed during Big Sam’s Great Escape, though changes behind the scenes ultimately meant the Black Cats couldn’t wrap up a deal for the American international. With Allardyce leaving for the England job and David Moyes coming in, bitter rivals Newcastle would pounce and lure him to St. James’ Park, where he is now a prominent¬†figure under Rafa Benitez.

Still, while Yedlin might have burned his bridges in Sunderland, his initial arrival was an exciting one and, ultimately, he did prove to be a smart signing.

With that in mind, here’s a look at how Sunderland fans reacted on Twitter to his loan signing in 2015.
