Transfer flashback: Georginio Wijnaldum

Newcastle signed Netherlands international midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum for £14.5m in the summer of 2015.

The then-24-year-old had just come from a fantastic season with PSV Eindhoven, winning the Eredivisie, and being awarded the Dutch Footballer of the Year, scoring 18 goals in all competitions during the 2014/15 season.

This was a signing that brought a lot of promise to The Magpies, having finished in 15th the previous season. The Dutchman had the ability to take Newcastle up the table, and fans knew this, believing this made them a serious force in the Premier League.

This is what the fans had to say:

The Netherlands international (now valued at £27m by Transfermarkt) only spent one season at St James’ Park, and it was not a season to remember.

While the midfielder managed a very respectable 11 goals and five assists in the Premier League, he could not stop his side being relegated. The problem was that his goals made up a quarter of the entire team’s that season, which went a long way in determining their final league position.

He sealed a move to Liverpool at the end of that season, and very few fans would blame him. He clearly had the quality of being a high profile Premier League player, and did not belong in the Championship.

The fans’ jubilation at this signing quickly turned to despair as the team struggled miserably all season.
