Transfer Flashback: Jack Rodwell

Jack Rodwell’s time at Sunderland will be remembered as a rip-roaring failure. However, when he signed for the club in August 2014, the fans were elated and couldn’t wait to see their new man in action at the Stadium of Light.

The Mackems were delighted to see that their club had been able to poach Rodwell from Manchester City on a bumper five-year deal, and they had high hopes that the midfielder would be able to shine and keep them in the Premier League. However, after three seasons in the top flight, the midfielder was apart of the side that got relegated, and then quickly became public enemy number one in their Championship campaign.
The midfielder was reportedly (via Sport 24) on big wages during the Mackem’s season in the Championship, and whilst the fans had high hopes of bouncing straight back to the Premier League, they suffered another drop into the third-tier of English football. Rodwell’s contract was eventually terminated in summer 2018 after he featured just twice during the Championship.
