Flashback: Newcastle United 5-1 Tottenham Hotspur

This will be one memory that Newcastle fans will never want to forget. The Magpies had a dire 2015/16 season, but when Rafa Benitez was brought in, despite their relegation, the fans were given hope. Their last game that season, having already been relegated, saw Tottenham Hotspur come to St James Park and the performance was an incredible one.

That day in May against the Lilywhites remains the last time that Newcastle have scored five goals in one game in the Premier League, and it’s one that will be remembered fondly by the home fans. Granted, there was nothing to play for on the day with the title race, top four places and relegation battle all decided, but the Magpies still did the business, smashing in five goals despite having ten men.
To this day, that result and performance is probably the best that the Geordies have seen under Rafa Benitez, and if he can ever repeat that kind of feat against a top-six side then it will be one that the fans laud forever. However, the fact that the win was so emphatic made it more than dead-rubber, as it gave the Geordies hope.
After that game, with a season in the Championship ahead of them, the fans believed that they would be back in the top flight soon, and that was what the fans said as they went out with a bang.
You can read the Magpies’ comments after that famous win here:
goodbye BPL, we left with a bang. WE WILL BE BACK

The Magpies may have tasted the bitter pill of relegation after their famous win, but the win made it easier to stomach and gave them hope of a swift return, which as we all now know, Rafa Benitez helped them achieve.
