Transfer Flashbacks: Harry Maguire

Last season, Harry Maguire was one of the standout central defenders in the Premier League, and his array of strong performances that campaign saw him called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Russia.

The 25-year-old impressed throughout the tournament, and his stock has risen significantly since with Jose Mourinho’s desire to bring him to Old Trafford well-documented (via Sky Sports).

Mourinho, however, was left empty-handed in his pursuit of Maguire and a new centre-half in general, something that would have delighted Leicester City supporters.

Following Leicester’s rebuff of Manchester United’s advances for Maguire, the England international put pen to paper on a new five-year deal in a move the Foxes were wise to make.

Given his ability as a centre-back, as well as Manchester United, it would not be surprising to see the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal also make approaches for the former Hull City man next summer.

But with Maguire now tied down to a new contract, Leicester hold all the cards regarding the future of their star central defender.

On top of being a capable defender with his aerial superiority being one of his strongest attributes, where Maguire’s main strength lies is his in his ability to bring the ball out of defence be it with a marauding run or line-breaking pass.

With that in mind, Maguire is an attractive proposition for teams in the Premier League top six, whose managers are adamant in them playing out of the back.

Luckily for Leicester fans, though, who were optimistic about Maguire’s arrival at the club back in 2017, his future looks to be at the King Power.
