TT Flashback: Birmingham City sell Demarai Gray -Transfer Flashbacks

Birmingham City have produced a number of exciting talents over the years but arguably one of their best in recent times has to be Demarai Gray, who is now plying his trade at Leicester City. 

The Englishman joined Leicester for £4.59 million (as per Transfermarkt) back in January of 2016.

Some supporters were unmoved by the club’s announcement as they took to Twitter to express their delight that the club now had money to spend on potentially bringing players in.

Demarai Gray joined Birmingham City’s academy as an under-11. He made his debut back in October of 2013 as he came on as a substitute for Jesse Lingard in a 4-0 win over Millwall.

He went on to sign his first professional contract on the 9th of December after impressing in the first-team ranks, but he had to wait until the 19th of April 2014 to score his first goal for the club. The youngster’s performances over the season earned him the Academy Player of the Season award, which really kickstarted his career.

Gray was a regular in the side the following season as he produced six goals and two assists, which included a hat-trick against Reading at St Andrew’s. He was slowly starting to become of the Blues’ star men and fans were starting to realise just how special the academy talent was.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to enjoy too much success during his final half-season at the club as he only produced one goal and one assist. But, fans definitely appreciated all that he had done for the club prior to his departure and some may wish they could have kept hold of him as he’s gone on to become a Premier League star.
