Sunderland could have easily come out of Tuesday night’s game against Rotherham United with a win, but the 1-1 draw does keep Jack Ross’ side fourth for now, with a game-in-hand on two of the teams above them.
The defining moment of the game was Aiden McGeady’s penalty being saved by Daniel Iversen in the 29th minute, though there were plenty of little moments that helped shape the game.
As often seems to be the case, Luke O’Nien provided many of those with his hearty performance for the Black Cats.
O’Nien completed all 3 of the tackles he attempted during the game, a number which was only surpassed by Conor McLaughlin, as per WhoScored – he was also level with Dylan McGeouch for the most interceptions, having made 3.
These weren’t the only ways he helped avert danger, as he won 6 aerial duels and made 1 clearance, while he also created it with 1 key pass.
This sort of defensive discipline is not a one-off, as he has averaged 3.4 aerial duels won per game this season, while also making 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 2.3 clearances and 2.3 fouls each match.
This is something that many at Sunderland will have likely come to expect from the 24-year-old, though that doesn’t make the contribution any less important for the team.
