Unsung hero: Ryan Kent shows why Rangers must splash cash

Despite their best efforts, a plucky Rangers side were unable to hold out against Celtic on Sunday in a derby day embroiled in controversy and drama.

Rangers, who entered the fixture on the back of an Old Firm victory last December, looked lost in the opening exchanges against their opponents and were lucky to last 27 minutes before Celtic found the back of the net for the first time through Man of the Match winner Odsonne Edouard.

It’s always a fiery encounter between this two sides and Alfredo Morelos stayed true to form when he reacted to some light provocation elbowing Celtic captain and windup merchant Scott Brown in the face.

Without top scorer Morelos, Rangers looked to on-loan Liverpool man Ryan Kent for inspiration, and he duly answered. Following some delightful build-up play between Daniel Candeias and James Tavernier, Kent skilfully took the ball past the napping Celtic defenders to score with his side’s first shot on target.

Despite looking the better on the two sides towards the end of the game, with Ryan Jack extremely close to completing an emphatic comeback, Celtic grabbed a late winner, James Forrest the beneficiary of Tavernier’s misplayed pass.

In a game that looked so one sided early on, Rangers fans can be proud of their team’s efforts – excluding, of course, Morelos.

Ryan Kent was definitely the pick of the bunch for us after an absolutely sensational performance.

It needed real quality and guile to pick up the pieces and carry the team forwards when Morelos was dismissed, and the Englishman did it incredibly well. Fearless, industrious and clinical, he was the one player who truly looked like a threat every time he touched the ball.

Gerrard will consider him his star man now Morelos has disappointed again, and if his performances are anything like what we saw on Sunday then Rangers should finish the season strongly. It’s just a shame he’s reportedly (as per the Daily Record) unlikely to stick around after his loan deal expires.
