David McGoldrick produced a brilliant display as Sheffield United drew 1-1 away at West Ham. We have taken a closer look at his performance against the Hammers in the latest edition of our Unsung Hero feature.
Sheffield United maintained their impressive unbeaten start away from home in the Premier League on Saturday, drawing 1-1 against West Ham United (via BBC Sport).
Lys Mousset was once again the man who grabbed the headlines having scored his second goal in as many games (Transfermarkt), but the performance of David McGoldrick shouldn’t be ignored.
The Republic of Ireland international has recently come back into contention after missing three league matches through injury (Transfermarkt).
But manager Chris Wilder has thrown him straight back into the starting 11, showing just how much he rates the player. And in fairness to McGoldrick, he did demonstrate his value at the London Stadium.
During his 80 minutes on the pitch, the striker won five aerial duels, made four clearances, played one key pass, took two shots on target and completed three successful dribbles. He finished with an impressive 7.31 match rating, the second-highest of any Sheffield United player for that game (via WhoScored).
McGoldrick joined the Blades in 2018, and was a key figure in their promotion from the Championship last season. Indeed he made 45 appearances in the 2018/19 campaign, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists (Transfermarkt).
He is clearly one of Wilder’s key players again this season having started six Premier League games and made one substitute appearance. And whilst he is yet to score, his play does seem to have a positive impact on the team as they have lost just two games in which he has played (Transfermarkt).
He may not get the same amount of attention from pundits as others in the Sheffield United’s team, but McGoldrick is certainly a key figure in this side.
