Rangers overcame the challenge of Feyenoord in their opening Europa League group stage clash at Ibrox on Thursday night as Steven Gerrard’s side put in a top-quality performance.
The Gers managed to take all three points in front of a packed Ibrox when Sheyi Ojo hit a screaming effort past Kenneth Vermeer that left the Dutch shot-stopper without a chance.
Gerrard was full of praise for his side following their victory, with the manager taking the time to praise the whole squad and admitted that they were outstanding as he appeared to reserve a special mention for Borna Barisic in his pre-match press conference ahead of their trip to St. Johnstone.
However, there could be an argument that the Ibrox chief should have, perhaps, also highlighted Steven Davis’ performance as well, as the veteran midfielder played a hugely important role for the Gers in the middle of the park.
According to data compiled by WhoScored, the Northern Ireland international managed to achieve an impressive two tackles, two interceptions and one clearance, whilst he completed 80% of his 40 passes with the 51 touches of the ball he had.
Davis, who signed permanently from Southampton in the summer after spending six months on loan with his former club in the winter, has started to come into his own in recent weeks, with Gary McAllister claiming the 34-year-old was at ‘the top of his game’.
Indeed, it would appear Rangers News feel the same, as they gave him a nine out of ten as they exclaimed “What a player.”
The Scottish Sun noted that the Northern Ireland international had used “all his experience” – an opinion shared by The Daily Record in their own player ratings article – whilst Football Scotland stated that he was “a class act as always”.
If Davis, who is valued at £1.8m by Transfermarkt, can continue these performances for Rangers for the duration of the campaign (which is going to be extremely difficult), then this season could be an extremely successful one for Gerrard and the Light Blues.
