Calum Chambers is one who hasn’t quite lived up to expectations at Arsenal. The young defender joined the club from Southampton back in summer 2014. However, he’s failed to develop and is spending this season at Fulham on-loan. So far, though, the 23-year-old has been used in midfield and could reform his Arsenal career alongside Lucas Torreira.
The 23-year-old has been looked at as a young defender for a long time, but his future could lie in the heart of the Gunners midfield. A lot has been made of Lucas Torreira since he made the move to The Emirates over the summer, and Chambers could turn out to be the perfect partner for the 22-year-old Uruguayan with his tough-tackling defensive mindset alongside the impressive new signing.
When Chambers made the move from Southampton to The Emirates, it was around the same time that Tottenham made the move to poach Eric Dier from Sporting, and there was a fierce argument between fans of the two clubs over who was better. In recent years it’s become clear that Dier is far superior, but if Chambers follows the Spurs man and becomes a versatile defensive midfielder then he could match his levels.
There’s no doubting that Arsenal have had some real struggles as of late with the lack of a strong defensive line, but if they could get the perfect pairing in front of the back four in Lucas Torreira and Calum Chambers then Unai Emery could go some way to turning things around at the club defensively, although the chances are he’ll need to spend on a central defender too.
Whilst it will certainly be easier said than done, if Chambers can continue to perform on-loan at Craven Cottage in a holding midfield role then there’s no reason why he can’t be adapted to play in the Gunners’ double pivot under Unai Emery. Torreira has been used alongside Granit Xhaka so far in his Arsenal career, but the Swiss midfielder lacks the defensive side of game, meaning Chambers could be a handy player to be able to switch in and out depending on what the Gunners need.
