Like the rest of his Newcastle United team-mates, it was a very underwhelming start to the season for central defender Fabian Schar to say the least.
The 27-year-old joined the Tyneside club from La Liga outfit Deportivo de La Coruna last summer and initially failed to make much of an impact in his new surroundings.
Months later, however, and Schar finds himself at the heart of Newcastle’s defence after coming up with some big performances.
And it appears those appearances have not gone unnoticed with the Daily Mirror now reporting that Tottenham are interested in bringing the former Deportivo man to White Hart Lane.
Mauricio Pochettino could face competition from north London rivals Arsenal, according to the same outlet, but that should not deter the Argentinian coach from pushing for Schar.
The Switzerland international might just be able to solve a possible dilemma heading Pochettino’s way. Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham still remains uncertain despite the 30-year-old’s contract recently being extended (Telegraph), leaving Spurs possibly needing a replacement.
And Schar, a very technical footballer, fits the profile of centre-half Pochettino will probably be looking for. On the ball, the Newcastle man is excellent, something he has spoken about in the past.
“I’m not like a typical defender. I of course defend, but I’m quite good with the ball, I like to play. I want to build up the game from behind and I think that is a strength of mine,” Schar told Newcastle’s official club website upon his arrival.
But the ex-Basel centre-back is not just skilled when in possession. In recent weeks, he has shown he is very much a capable defender, winning his tackles and aerial duels to help inspire Newcastle to some huge wins.
Considering all of that, Tottenham could do a lot worse than Schar when it comes to searching for a new central defender in the summer.
