It’s been a tough season for Tottenham so far this year. Following a summer where Spurs failed to sign any new players combined with the ongoing problems with the stadium, it looks as though it’s going to be a tough season for the Tottenham Hotspur faithful.
Even with all those problems hanging over the squad, Mauricio Pochettino has managed to keep Spurs in the pack chasing Champions League football this season. Thanks to Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen, Spurs have managed to stay afloat this season.
Spurs started the season inconsistently but over the recent weeks, they have managed to string together some wins which has resulted in them not only giving themselves a chance in Europe but also pushed them to third in the table.
Recently, however, they were absolutely demolished by Arsenal in the North London Derby. At the Emirates, Pochettino’s side couldn’t handle Arsenal’s intense and aggressive style of play. There were many poor performers for Tottenham on the day but arguably the worst of the lot was defender, Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgium international has been a superb player for Tottenham over his time at the club but this season, he has seriously struggled for form. Against Arsenal, the experienced defender looked completely lost. He gave away a penalty in the first-half for a deliberate handball and was then later sent off for a rash challenge on Alexandre Lacazette.
It may be argued that his hamstring injury has hampered his form but at 31, it seems his better years are behind him. He doesn’t quite have the pace to play at the top level anymore and Pochettino needs to look to someone new to freshen up the defence.
He already has Davinson Sanchez in the side and has also played Juan Foyth this season. The club has also recently been linked with a move for Bournemouth defender, Nathan Ake and in truth, he’s the one they should be looking to bring in. The Dutchman is great with the ball and has developed his defensive game massively with Bournemouth.
Whether Pochettino decides to drop Vertonghen for Foyth or bring in Ake in the summer, Pochettino must drop Vertonghen from the starting XI.
