Every single season there are ridiculous rumours that link the latest talented youngsters to new clubs, with the Premier League always a touted destination for promising stars. However, if this out-there rumour becomes more than just that and Mike Ashley splashes on Hoffenheim’s Joelinton then both the player and the club could reap the rewards.
With Mike Ashley splashing out a club-record fee on Miguel Almiron on deadline day it marked a very happy day for the Geordies. However, these reports suggest it may not have been the one-off that they all expected. An ambitious report from German outlet Sport1 claims that the Toon may end up forking out an incredible £52 million to bring Joelinton to the Premier League, and interest in the player from the Magpies was later confirmed by The Chronicle.
As far as Newcastle fans are concerned, the club will never fork out £52 million on a single player whilst Mike Ashley still holds the chequebook at the club. But with two outlets both corroborating each other’s reports about the club, the interest and the fee in Joelinton, it may not be so out of reach. Only the summer will tell how this plays out, but there’s no doubting the Brazilian could thrive in the Premier League for the Magpies.
The 22-year-old has bagged himself an impressive 20 combined goals and assists in 30 appearances for Hoffenheim in all competitions and that kind of form is always going to attract interest from top clubs. The brilliant thing about Joelinton is that he doesn’t rely on one part of his game. He can finish on both feet and with his head, works well defensively and has an eye of a pass, with seven Bundesliga assists only proving that.
At the age of 22, there is so much potential for a top manager like Rafa Benitez to hone the striker and sculpt him into the man that could take the Geordies away from their relegation scrap and into a side that can make a mid-table finish routine, as opposed to a one-off. The striker would only improve at St James Park and proving himself in the Premier League is a chance the youngster should jump at, especially given how many of his countrymen have shone out of England.
