Lawrence Shankland has been linked with moves to Swansea City, Sunderland, Rangers and Celtic in recent weeks. This article from The Chronicle confirms these links and with the 42 goals striker set to leave Ayr United at the end of his contract, he will surely be snapped up by a bigger club, but is it really a good move?
The 23-year-old has made pretty much everyone who has turned up to Ayrshire to take them on look silly with his ability to smash in goals and tee up opportunities for teammates too. Those 42 strikes have been made up of 34 goals and eight assists, yet with those goals coming in the Scottish Championship it is hard to tell if the Scot would be able to replicate his form at a higher level.
That’s where these links are coming in. It might sound a lot like we’re clutching at straws with claims that Shankland isn’t worth signing, but when the clubs being linked have the goldfish bowl feel like there is in Glasgow for Rangers, the pressure on the youngster could break his career despite the incredible form he’s shown early on for Ayr United.
Steven Gerrard’s current striking options are broad. Alfredo Morelos, Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe are the three men he has to rely upon, yet we don’t know if Morelos will still be in Glasgow lighting up Ibrox when we come around to the start of the Scottish Premier League season in August. If he is still there, Shankland should be avoided, as they wouldn’t be able to give him the chances he deserves.
The youngster has it in his locker to shine at the level which Rangers are playing and aiming for, but it’s a big step too far in our opinion, and moving to a club with slightly lower expectations should be what he looks for with a gradual build up to fire at the top end of the Scottish top flight. Shankland will be available on a free, so signing him up and loaning him out wouldn’t be the worst idea, but bringing in the Ayr man and throwing him at the deep end is not the right move.
