What does the future hold for Mesut Özil at Arsenal?

World Cup winner and 92-cap Germany international Mesut Özil remains one of the most interesting players in world football.

On his day, the midfielder can terrorise a defence like no other player, with a supreme passing range and vision. On other days, he can be made to look remarkably average indeed. This has been the case during his entire tenure in London.

No one knew how the midfielder would react after this summer’s World Cup debacle, which culminated in him retiring from international football, but it looks as though it has had a positive effect on his club form.

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery has given the former Real Madrid man a new freedom and lease of life at The Emirates, which he appears to be thriving under. In eight games so far this season, he has already got three goals and one assist.

Özil’s tantrum after being withdrawn from the recent match against Crystal Palace is an indication of the hunger and determination that he has to play and affect games. Equally, it is a sign that he may not be held in as high esteem as former manager Arsène Wenger held him. He still has some work to do in proving that he is indispensable to this Arsenal team.

So while the German’s future did not appear so clear at the beginning of the season, it now looks promising for Arsenal fans. At only 30 years old, Özil still has a lot to give to The Gunners, and fans will still be expecting a lot from him. In Emery, it looks as though there is a manager that can turn this slightly erratic and inconsistent talent into a man that is world class week in week out.
