# Liverpool: Fans laud Fernando Torres

**He may have tailed off when he joined Chelsea, but Fernando Torres was an absolute star when he joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007.**

The Reds paid [£26.5m](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2007/jul/04/newsstory.sport3) for the Spaniard, which at the time was a club-record fee, but it is fair to say he repaid that sum. In his first campaign, he was fantastic, scoring [33](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fernando-torres/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/7767) goals in all competitions, and he would continue to score at a rapid rate right up until he left for Chelsea in 2011. All in all, he ended up with 81 goals in 142 games, and now certainly goes down as a club legend.

It seems he is still remembered fondly amongst the Reds supporters, as well. Twitter page Anything Liverpool asked their followers who would be the best in this current side between Xabi Alonso and Torres, and there was plenty of love for the latter – one fan even called him a “[phenomenon](https://twitter.com/JainaAnupam/status/1252439431732068352?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)“.

They have been reacting in their droves on the social media platform, and you can see some of the best comments below.

> Very difficult but I think Torres in his prime was a weapon of destruction, so maybe Torres! 🤷‍♀️

> In their prime? Torres no question. He was the best striker in the world. A phenomenon. [https://t.co/t9SdJpsPJx](https://t.co/t9SdJpsPJx)

> Torres was the best player in the world for two seasons. Prolific. Xabi is class, but Torres for the goals.

> Torres would break the PL goal record playing in our front 3.

> Was originally going to choose Alonso, but prime Torres? Put a ball anywhere near him in the final third and you’d bet that’s in the back of the net at any given moment!
