# Flashback: QPR’s 2014 Championship play-off final triumph

**With all the excitement of the play-off final bubbling, one team that will certainly be upset not to be involved is QPR. Not that they expected promotion, but they – more than many – will understand the jubilation of securing a place in the Premier League.**

In fact, the last time they won promotion was at the expense of Derby County, who now have a real chance of doing so themselves. How times have changed. But while QPR settled for 19th place finish this season, they will look back at their former success with fond memories.

What a win it was, and in the most unlikely of circumstances. Stating Derby dominated the 2014 Championship play-off final would be an understatement. Midfielder Gary O’Neil was shown a red on the 58th minute, leaving QPR with 35 minutes and a potential further 30 to defend for their lives.

Extra time was fast approaching, but Bobby Zamora had other ideas. With QPR yet to register a shot on target in the previous 89 minutes of play, the striker was alert to pounce on a defensive mistake to smash the ball into the far corner. QPR fans erupted into life in what had been difficult match to watch. Bobby had done it. Harry Redknapp had done it. QPR had done it. The fans went mad.

Unfortunately for everyone at the club, QPR have since tumbled back into the Championship and, in all honesty, don’t seem likely for another promotion any time soon. But while you can take away Premier League football, you can never take the memories from the fans.

After a gruelling season of Championship football, what could be better to reminisce over? A 90th-minute winner at Wembley to see your beloved side gain promotion to the pinnacle of English football. It’s the stuff of fairy tales, something all young footballers dream about.

Yes, things have rather gone downhill, but what a day it was. It will live in the memories of QPR fans for generations.
