# Flashback: Takumi Minamino signing proving pointless from Liverpool perspective

***According to notable transfer expert [Duncan Castles](https://twitter.com/TransferPodcast/status/1242005367346860032), this summer’s transfer window is likely to be a ‘depressed’ one compared to previous years amid the current suspension to football, largely around the world. With that in mind and the fact there’s nothing to give us a footballing fix, the Transfer Tavern are doing their best to remind their readers how some of their club’s fans reacted to the biggest signings of*** ***this season in order to focus on what’s been before us, rather than the uncertainty ahead.***

[Midway through December](https://metro.co.uk/2019/12/19/liverpool-agree-deal-sign-takumi-minamino-11931532/), it was announced that Liverpool would be signing Red Bull Salzburg attacker Takumi Minamino. It was a move that seemed to thrill the supporters as the club finally added more depth to their attack which featured just Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi as back-ups to their formidable front three [(via Transfermarkt)](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/12/12/liverpool-buy-salzburgs-japanese-attackertakumi-minamino-cut/). One fan referred to him as the ‘Japanese Messi’.

Did the move really warrant such a response from some of the Anfield faithful? Indeed, the chances of the Japan international instantly breaking into a front three that is considered to be the [best in world football](https://www.goal.com/en/news/no-better-front-three-in-the-world-than-liverpools-mane/7niscnxcc1rv1rnds5234jixf) was minimal. After all, the Premier League title was already sewn up by the time the winger joined up with the squad in January as the 2-0 win over [Sheffield United](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50914077) saw them move seven points clear with a game in hand.

Since the victory over the Blades, Minamino hasn’t started a single league game despite the fact Jurgen Klopp’s men have gone on to increase the gap from seven points to [25](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/table). The news only gets worse for the 25-year-old with the Anfield giants linked with moves for [Jadon Sancho](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11937417/liverpool-could-just-be-jadon-sanchos-next-club-kaveh-solhekol-the-insider) and [Timo Werner](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-would-pick-timo-werner-21712272), who would surely provide more competition for the current forwards given their potential transfer fees, with suggestions they could cost [£170m](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/11207378/sancho-werner-liverpool-transfer/).

So, in all seriousness excitement and the eventual transfer of the £11.25m-rated, [as per Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/leistungsdaten/spieler/165793), ace really was misplaced. Indeed, he could well find himself falling even further down the pecking order should the Reds complete a move for either [Sancho](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jadon-sancho/leistungsdaten/spieler/401173) or [Werner](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/timo-werner/leistungsdaten/spieler/170527).
