Newcastle United could still secure the signing of highly-rated Lille attacker Jonathan David this summer, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: David excels for Lille

The 22-year-old is arguably seen as one one of the most exciting attacking players in Europe's top five league currently, playing a starring role for Lille.

David has already scored twice in as many Ligue 1 games this season, while his overall tally for his current club is 33 goals in 97 appearances.

David has been linked with a move to Newcastle already this summer, as clubs look to snap him up, and there is still time in the transfer window for the Magpies to get their man.

The Latest: Newcastle move not ruled out

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones refused to rule out Eddie Howe acquiring the Canadian's signature this summer:

"I do wonder if they might go for Jonathan David or somebody like that if these ones don’t work out.

"I think he’ll probably be a bit more expensive, but there’s obviously a mould that they’re trying to fit in within Newcastle, but also they don’t want to spend that much money if they do end up splashing out."

The Verdict: What a signing he would be

Newcastle's summer transfer business has been relatively quiet to date but signing David would be an explosive signal of intent - one that could help take Newcastle to the next level.

Indeed, Ligue 1 expert and journalist Adam White has also raved over David, having called him a would-be 'huge statement signing' when asked about his previous links to West Ham (via GiveMeSport).

The starlet has scored 20 goals in just 30 caps for Canada and will hope to star at the upcoming World Cup, and he would bring so much firepower to the Magpies' attack.

Not only that but David would be a long-term acquisition with a huge ceiling, so he could spearhead what is hopefully a legendary period at St James' Park coming up.
