West Ham United's Ivory Coast star Maxwel Cornet will be "assessed daily" in his recovery from injury.

The Lowdown: A significant setback

The thigh injury sustained to Cornet in early October came at the worst possible time.

The £17.5million Ivory Coast international had finally proven himself to David Moyes and was granted his first Premier League start for the side in what was a must-win game at the time, with Moyes' future uncertain back then.

Cornet has not featured since, having suffered a setback in his recovery.

His initial blow was meant to keep him out for just two to three weeks - it's now almost been two months.

The Latest: West Ham "assessing"

According to injury expert Ben Dinnery, who contributes for Sky Sports, the Hammers are "assessing" Cornet on a daily basis, with the club wary of overloading him as he enters the latter stages of the recovery process.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Dinnery said:

“That initial timeline for Cornet was around two to three weeks.

“Typically, when you suffer a setback, you’re maybe looking at an additional seven to ten days on top of that, maybe even 14.

“It’s one of those muscular problems where you don’t want to push players too hard once they’ve had that reaction because essentially you could put them out for a significant period.

“So, I think, it’ll be one that can be even assessed on a daily basis.

“Ones where you will work with the players, you want to make sure that they’re coming through that recovery process, without any kind of issues.

“Because once that happens, if you have a flare-up again, you just need to ease the players back.”

The Verdict: Recovery Time

Whilst a setback of any kind is by no means appreciated, the timing of the World Cup means that Cornet has the chance to recover in time for what is essentially the second half of the season.

In a 'normal' campaign, the 26-year-old would miss an abundance of games, so there is a slight silver lining with the international break in mind.

Cornet can now concentrate on his recovery, ready to make an impact in and around January.
