# Glasgow Rangers: Steven Gerrard waxes lyrical about Calvin Bassey

**Steven Gerrard has praised Glasgow Rangers’ new signing Calvin Bassey, calling him a “fantastic talent” in the process.**

The Gers recently signed the left-back from Leicester City, paying just [£230,000](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/calvin-bassey-chose-rangers-over-22150225) for a player who the Foxes valued at around £3m. As it stands, the 20-year-old is [yet to make an appearance in professional football](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/calvin-bassey/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/461883), but Gerrard will be hoping he can make his mark in the future.

Speaking to Rangers TV about the youngster ([via The Scottish Sun](https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/5713451/rangers-steven-gerrard-calvin-bassey-surprise/)), he said:

> *“Calvin is going to surprise a few people. Not many people know the name but we have tracked him for some time. We’ve watched him a lot and he’s a fantastic talent. He’s big, strong, quick and aggressive. He’s excellent in one v one situations.*

> *“Calvin can play in two or three different positions and always has a smile on his face. He is your modern-day, powerful full-back. I’m looking forward to seeing how people take to him. I think when they’ve watched him quite a bit, they’ll be as excited as I am.”*

Gerrard needed to bring in a new left-back following the [departures](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11788/11991219/rangers-andy-halliday-jon-flanagan-and-wes-foderingham-among-six-players-leaving-club#:~:text=Rangers%20have%20confirmed%20the%20summer,under%20Mark%20Warburton%20in%202015.) of [Jon Flanagan](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jon-flanagan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/145922/plus/0?saison=&verein=124&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) and [Andy Halliday](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/andy-halliday/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/59543/plus/0?saison=&verein=124&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=51276), both of whom have deputised for the 54-time Scottish champions when Borna Barisic has not been available. The Croatia international is the former Liverpool captain’s number one choice, but the squad is still in need of a back-up option.

That is exactly what Bassey can provide and, not only that, he is also one for the future – if he is nurtured correctly, he could fill that role for years to come.
