# Glasgow Rangers: Alan Hutton discusses Jon McLaughlin transfer

**Alan Hutton has [told Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-hutton-reacts-as-rangers-agree-terms-of-fourth-summer-signing/) that Jon McLaughin has had his head turned by Glasgow Rangers following his arrival at Ibrox.**

The 32-year-old [completed](https://rangers.co.uk/news/headlines/gers-sign-john-mclaughlin/) a switch to the 54-time Scottish champions on Tuesday and will now become Allan McGregor’s deputy between the sticks. The former Sunderland shot-stopper is a [two-time Scotland international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jon-mclaughlin/nationalmannschaft/spieler/92983/verein_id/3380) and conceded just [27](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jon-mclaughlin/leistungsdaten/spieler/92983) goals in 32 matches for the Black Cats in League One last term.

Hutton has been talking about the transfer and said to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/exclusive-hutton-reacts-as-rangers-agree-terms-of-fourth-summer-signing/):

> *“He obviously knows the Scottish league, he’s been capped for Scotland a few times so I think he’s got that experience and knowledge of the Scottish game.*
>
> *“He’s been down south for a long time, Sunderland are a massive club as well so he understands what the pressure’s like.*
>
> *“As it stands, Allan McGregor’s going to be the number one, no questions asked, we don’t really need to think about that. Can he go from being a number one to a number two and only playing the odd games?*
>
> *“It’s a massive draw to come to Rangers, it’s another huge club – it was definitely one that’s turned his head.”*

McGregor is still the [first choice option](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/allan-mcgregor/leistungsdaten/spieler/9422) and that is unlikely to change in the immediate future, but it will be interesting to see whether [£293,000-valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jon-mclaughlin/marktwertverlauf/spieler/92983) McLaughlin can put any pressure on the 38-year-old in that respect. Wes Foderingham was the previous backup option and he made just [13](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wes-foderingham/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/61697) appearances under Steven Gerrard before [being released last month](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52728944).

Therefore, McLaughlin has a job on his hands to earn a regular first team spot, but there is no doubt that it is a huge opportunity for him after making the switch from a third-tier outfit. It remains to be seen what influence he can have on the ‘Gers over the coming season.
