If there’s one man fans will surely be relying on next year to pull Arsenal out of their Europa League and Premier League doldrums, it’s got to be Alexandre Lacazette.
The Frenchman has played with a lot more panache than what we saw from him in his first year with the Gunners, and without doubt, has been one of the club’s most impressive and consistent performers throughout the course of the season.
We all love someone who turns up in the big games, and Lacazette is most certainly one of them having scored a number of vital goals on the most important of occasions against the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool this season (not that they got the club particularly far, but in the moment, they were nice).
The Frenchman is what we’d call an all-rounder, a jack of all trades; at least compared to his partner in crime, Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng. Indeed, recording 10 assists over the season across all competitions would suggest he’s got a bit more about him than the Gabonese, who only got 7 despite scoring more.
And while he finished the season on just 13 league goals, which isn’t all that great from a top level Premier League striker – considering 11 others finished ahead of him (including former Arsenal target Jamie Vardy), There’s every bit of evidence to suggest that he’s going to improve next year, having already increased last season’s direct goal contribution (22) by ten (32).
However, judging by Arsenal’s frailties towards the end of the season, which saw them lose four and draw two of their final ten, and the gloom of the Baku final, it’s evident that the club need to make some changes in the summer, in general.
Perhaps with some smart business this summer, Arsenal may be better equipped to unlocking Lacazette’s true potential.
