Portsmouth have certainly started to put together the results that they have been lacking for the majority of 2019, however, there must be some concern that the Fratton Park outfit have potentially left it a little too late to win promotion from League One via the automatic spots.
A number of men have played key roles for Kenny Jackett’s side this season, with the likes of Ronan Curtis and Jamal Lowe whilst Omar Bogle has proved to be an excellent acquisition this January, however, one man has proved to be vitally important with his contributions.
Brett Pitman has had a rather difficult campaign for Pompey this season as he has been left out of the side on a number of occasions and has seen his match-time be severely limited. However, that appears to have changed recently.
The experienced 31-year-old has been utilised in a new role as a number 10 under Jackett and it is a change that has seriously benefited the club.
In the absence of Curtis due to his recent freak injury, Pitman has dropped deeper on the pitch and has looked very comfortable, although the goals had not been something that had been too regular.
However, what he has shown that he has offered versatility that has given Portsmouth an extra element in their attacking department and Pompey have finally seen Pitman hit the back of the net on a regular basis more recently.
The experienced forward has come up with goals against Walsall and Shrewsbury Town recently and has started to look back at his best.
Pitman has the ability to be a match-winner and should prove to be vitally important in Portsmouth’s quest to try and clinch an automatic promotion spot back to the Championship.
However, if Pompey have to go through the play-off system in order to play in England’s second tier next season, Pitman could just be the man to help them to do so.
