Introducing: Duvan Zapata

West Ham United are a club in a superb position. Not only have the Hammers been lucky enough to get in a former Premier League winning manager in Manuel Pellegrini, but they’ve also brought in some top attacking talent. However, as they bid for Duvan Zapata, they could be securing the final piece of the puzzle to crack the top six.

Tuttosport via Calciomercato is the Italian outlet that have linked West Ham to the Colombian international. Indeed, the Hammers are said to have had a €40m bid rejected for the striker, who would be a good signing.

At the age of 27, the goalscorer has enjoyed spells with a number of different Serie A sides, including Napoli, Udinese, Sampdoria and currently Atalanta. So far, though, this season has seen the goalscorer’s form rocket, as he’s bagged 14 in 20, including a four-goal haul against Frosinone in a 5-0 win.

The form of Zapata is something that has come out of nowhere. In his first 13 games for the Atalanta on-loan, he scored just one goal and registered a meagre two assists. In his last seven games, though, he’s shot into life and bagged 13 goals, including a hat-trick former club Udinese as well as his sublime four-goal away display, and it’s easy to see why the Hammers want him.

If Zapata (who has a Transfermarkt value of £19.8m) was to up-stakes and leave Italy after five and a half years then West Ham would be an ideal location. The Hammers currently have Andy Carroll, Michail Antonio and Lucas Perez in their ranks who have failed to pull their weight up front and allowing one of those three to leave to bring in Zapata would be a masterstroke by Pellegrini, who will have one eye on breaking into the Premier League’s top six.

So far, the Chilean has been doing an exquisite job at the London Stadium and his captures of Felipe Anderson, Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena have all been right on the money. If he could add someone with a little bit more directness in Zapata, as well as nursing Manuel Lanzini back into the first-team after injury, then West Ham could become a completely different entity this season.

The Hammers are currently 10th, yet they sit just two points behind 7th placed Watford. Despite that small gap, they then find themselves a massive 13 points behind 6th placed Manchester United. Bringing in Zapata may not allow them to usurp United, or whoever else it may be, and finish 6th this season, but with the Colombian hitman on-board, Pellegrini can start planning for a barnstorming second campaign at the helm of the club.
