Idrissa Gueye’s desire to leave Everton for Paris Saint-Germain in the winter transfer window was well-documented with the midfielder himself admitting how desperate he was to join the Ligue 1 champions.
“It is a dream that sadly did not come true,” Gueye told L’Equipe (via Sky Sports) after his failed move to the Parc des Princes. “But I was honoured that PSG were interested in me. Now, I know that I am of interest to these types of clubs, I am ready to go to the final level to join a top European club.”
Ultimately, with Gueye determined to leave Everton for a European powerhouse, the Merseyside club may soon find themselves searching for replacements. And when that time comes, they should look no further than Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele.
Ndombele, who has already been linked with a move to Goodison Park (Daily Mirror), is attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, leaving Everton in an unfavourable position should they target the 22-year-old in the summer.
Given their ambitions, though, Ndombele is exactly the profile of player they need to be going after regardless of who they end up having to go up against in the race for his signature.
While not a like-for-like replacement for Gueye, Ndombele, dubbed as the “new Essien” by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas (RMC Sport), would still bring so much to this Everton side.
The Frenchman is perfectly suited to playing as one of the pivots in Silva’s 4-2-3-1 formation, a role he could fulfil better than Gueye with his incredible skill set.
Like Gueye, Ndombele is capable of making tackles and winning the ball back from deep. But when it comes to more offensive moves, the France international is on another level.
His close control almost resembles that of a world-class No.10, allowing him to wiggle out of almost any situation before driving with the ball, while he also has the ability to play passes straight through the opposition’s defensive line.
Gueye replacement? Scratch that. Everton would be getting a Gueye upgrade of world-class potential if they land Ndombele in a development that would surely see Silva, Marcel Brands and Farhad Moshiri worshipped as gods at Goodison Park.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
