Ralph Hasenhüttl’s first game in charge of Southampton perhaps did not go to plan last week, as The Saints lost to Cardiff.
However, we only need to look back to his second game in charge at RB Leipzig, which proved what a successful manager he was going to be.
The Austrian had taken over the newly promoted club that summer (2016), and had earned a draw in his first game against Hoffenheim. Unfortunately, his second match was a visit from giants Borussia Dortmund.
This was a daunting second game for the new boys of the league; a team that boasted names like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mario Götze and André Schürrle. The club had just finished second in the Bundesliga the season before, and were coming from a win in their opening game of the season. Not many gave Hasenhüttl’s men a chance.
However, the Austrian busted many Ladbrokes promo code users and masterminded a victory over Dortmund, thanks to a late winner from now Liverpool star Naby Keïta, in what was a historic victory. Leipzig may have had significantly less possession, but Dortmund just could not break them down.
This victory was seismic, and announced the club’s arrival in the Bundesliga. It was also the beginning of a run of games that saw the club unbeaten in 13 matches, including nine victories. This gave the club the momentum to carry on through the rest of the season, where they finished in second place behind Bayern Munich.
This was a truly remarkable season that was historic. Had they failed to beat Dortmund early on, their season may have been ever so different.
Momentum is a wonderful thing in sport, and Hasenhüttl was able to build a lot at Leipzig. Southampton fans will only hope that he can do the same at St Mary’s.
