Though he was unable to get his name on the scoresheet in Charlton Athletic’s recent win over Bradford City, Igor Vetokele still put in an attacking display that impressed manager Lee Bowyer on the day.
And with things now really heating up at the top of League One in the race for Championship promotion, now really is a great time for the 27-year-old to start delivering.
“That’s the best Igor has played since I’ve been in charge,” Bowyer said in his post-match press conference (via Charlton’s official club website) when speaking about his forward after the game.
“He looked sharper, he looked fitter. It didn’t quite fall for him today but he looked very good today.”
The above comes after Bowyer revealed back in February that he told the Angola international that he wanted more of an impact from him heading into a clash against AFC Wimbledon in which he scored in.
“I said to Igor in training that I want more from him and he came on and made an impact,” the Charlton boss was quoted as saying by Press Association Sport/MSN following that clash at Kingsmeadow.
Ultimately, that is what Bowyer and the Charlton faithful need to see more of, especially with Karlan Grant no longer at the club.
When Lyle Taylor is having a quiet game and Joe Aribo cannot conjure up a moment of magic, Vetokele and co have got to step up if the Addicks are to go all the way in their pursuit of Championship football.
For the former F.C. Copenhagen man, back at The Valley after a couple of loan spells, now is the time to really kick on and find the form that was shown during his debut campaign with the south London club.
