Introducing: James Ward-Prowse is the man to save Southampton’s Premier League status

Southampton will know that things will need to get better on the pitch in order for them to retain their Premier League status for next season.

And, things certainly appear encouraging for those with connections to the club as performances have definitely started to improve.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has clearly brought a fresh outlook to the side who appeared to look a little stale and out of ideas under the guidance of Mark Hughes, despite his heroics in keeping them in the top-flight last season.

As mentioned, things appear to be going in the right direction for the Saints as of the moment, but the fans will know those improved displays need to be converted into results, something the club have not been able to achieve over the course of the campaign.

They looked extremely impressive in their match against Manchester United but unfortunately were unable to get anything from the game.

One man that starred in that game was James Ward-Prowse, who is an individual that will be key in helping the club pick up points and remain in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old, who is a one-time England international – and arguably should have more caps, is enjoying his best ever campaign at Southampton and appears to be thriving under the guidance of Hasenhuttl, making him feel like a new transfer at the St. Mary’s Stadium this winter, especially after he fell out of favour under Hughes.

With five goals to his name this season – having scored in back-to-back fixtures, the set-piece specialist has proven to be a crucial member of the squad and is just one of the players who have successfully graduated from their academy ranks in recent memory.

There will be concerns that he is yet to provide any of his team-mates an assist and that is something that will need to be addressed urgently, however, he is coming up with the goals that are giving The Saints a real chance of beating the drop.

Ward-Prowse will be extremely important to Southampton over the next nine Premier League games – something Hasenhuttl clearly echoes, and if he continues to perform as well as he has been since the turn of 2019, the club will be in a strong position to retain their status.

Southampton fans, do you believe James Ward-Prowse is vital to your chances of turning things around and keeping the club in the Premier League this season? Join in with the discussion below by letting us know what you think.
