Introducing: Leonardo Koutris as West Ham’s solution to their left-back problem

West Ham United have a problem at left-back. That has become as clear as day as the season approaches its final stages.

Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku have both been deployed in the position throughout the campaign, however, neither of them have been able to hold down the regular spot because of inconsistencies regarding their performances or injuries.

With the upcoming transfer window the ideal opportunity to freshen things up and make the team better, Mario Husillos and Manuel Pellegrini must act and make the position become less of a problem area and one that they will not need to have to address for a long while.

Enter, Leonardo Koutris.

The 23-year-old is currently starring for Olympiacos and has been making a name for himself as one of the brightest talents at left-back with his performances for the Greek outfit, which has led to talk about West Ham being interested in acquiring him this summer.

The Greece international is defensively solid, however, he is not afraid of bombing down the flanks and helping out when his team-mates are attacking the opposition’s final third. Koutris is more than capable of running with the ball at his feet and is more than confident in his ability to go past his defender to create opportunities.

Valued at £2.7million by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian-born Greek has a tremendous amount of pace that allows him to burst forward or get back should his team be on the wrong end of a counter-attack, whilst he is equally adept at making crucial tackles in one-on-one situations.

Those traits appear to make him an ideal candidate for Pellegrini as his system would allow the defender to get forward and be in a position to be threatening.

As mentioned, Koutris could be the perfect man for Husillos to try and capture this summer as he would certainly be a man that would likely have a long future at the club and, if he were to hit the ground running as well as he has for Olympiacos, then he should be rather successful.

With Cresswell and Masuaku continuing to be unreliable and blowing hot and cold with their own performances, the Greece international would have to be considered a serious upgrade on the options West Ham have at left-back.

West Ham fans, do you think the club should target Koutris this summer? Do you think he would be an upgrade to Cresswell and Masuaku? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us below.
