While Manchester United have been portrayed as this super-defensive team under Jose Mourinho, this season, they have been absolutely dreadful at the back.
In the Premier League, the Red Devils have conceded more goals than all of their top six rivals from the previous campaign with sides such as Southampton and Newcastle United managing to find the back of David de Gea’s net so easily this term.
With the transfer window almost here, though, Mourinho could be presented with the opportunity to sort things out in that department.
However, in Eric Bailly, the Portuguese coach may already have the answer to the massive problem he is currently facing.
After making an impressive start to life at Old Trafford following his arrival from Villarreal back in the summer of 2016, Bailly has since faded somewhat with injuries playing its part.
On top of that, for whatever reason, it also appears Mourinho has lost his trust in the 24-year-old.
However, whether that is the case or not, it does not change the fact that Bailly is still probably the most solid central defender Mourinho has at disposal. With that in mind, the Manchester United boss really should be turning to the Ivorian when possible given his complaints about the rest of the team’s defenders.
While Bailly can be erratic at times, he tops the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in practically every area.
The Ivory Coast international is superior in the air, a stronger tackler and has the sort of recovery pace the other two simply do not possess.
By no means will Bailly solve all of Manchester United’s problems which stretch way beyond what is going on at the back. But he is still a player with enough quality to give the Red Devils a massive and much-needed boost.
